Few health conditions are as frustrating to pet parents as pet allergies. The constant itching, discomfort, and secondary conditions that can develop, such as hot spots, are difficult to manage and cause misery for your beloved pets. While traditional Western medicine has many tools to help diagnose and manage allergies in pets, research shows that acupuncture can also be a useful complement for the treatment of itchy skin and seasonal allergies.
First used in ancient China more than 2,000 years ago, acupuncture involves the placement of tiny needles at specific points, or meridians, which direct the body’s energy to heal. Each needle placed in the points needed to treat a specific problem will enhance blood flow, reduce inflammation, and promote healing.
One of the benefits of acupuncture is that it can relieve noninfectious inflammation, such as allergies. Acupuncture can help to build and strengthen the immune system while we work to find and remove the allergens from your pet’s environment. By using an integrative approach, we can help your pet feel better, sooner.
At Westfield Veterinary Group, Dr. Adam Borut is trained by the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society to provide this treatment to pets.
If you feel your pet may benefit from acupuncture for allergy relief, call us to schedule an appointment. After a physical exam, Dr. Borut will work with you to tailor an acupuncture therapy plan that works for your pet.
